The drawings undoubtedly served as motifs in the repertoires made available for workshop apprentices, but were above all autonomous exercises intended for the indepth study of expressions. Tiepolo’s models are often represented as if caught on the spot, <strong>sur</strong>prised in a moment of astonishment, their mouths half-open with a lively gaze turned upwards. This is the case for a sheet representing a Young Boy Wearing a Turban sold at Christie’s on July 5th, 2016 (lot 25), a sheet representing a Man in Profile, Mouth Open, (Christie’s Paris, March 22nd, 2017, lot 7), the study kept at the Getty Museum (2002.31) and a sheet kept at the Cleveland Museum of Art (The Charles W. Harkness Endowment Fund 1929.558) that shows a young man very similar to ours, but who looks towards the right and not to the left. Our drawing, like the comparative examples cited above, should be grouped with the most beautiful drawings that Tiepolo made in this genre and demonstrates his admirable technical mastery: volume, expression and light are perfectly developed with the help of a red chalk line that is both vigorous and subtle as well as a masterly use of stumping, wash and white highlights, which illuminate the faces. This sheet was probably bought in Madrid by Armand François Louis de Mestral de Saint- Saphorin with about fifty other drawings from the Tiepolo studio. Saint-Saphorin studied at the University of Gottingen and was a chargé d’affaires in Dresden. He then became the King of Denmark’s Ambassador to Poland, Spain, the Netherlands, Russia, and Austria. George Knox studied Saint Saphorin’s important role as a collector of Tiepolo drawings 2 and first in 1970 and again in 1980 3 . Saint Saphorin’s large collection was dispersed among his various heirs and a portion given to Ferdinand de Cérenville in gratitude for his services. De Cérenville then bequeathed his drawings to his sons, Édouard and René (1875–1968). René de Cérenville gave a selection of his Tiepolo drawings to museums and sold the others including our drawing. 104
