studied by Furio Rinaldi 3 , was mostly made up of
drawings by Raphael dated between 1500 and 1510
and sheets by Timoteo Viti and Girolamo Genga.
The latter was Signorelli’s pupil before joining
Raphael and Viti. Genga possessed some sheets and
folios of works from his first master and probably
gave them (as well as some of his own drawings) to
Viti who added them to the collection. The Marquis
Antaldo Antaldi inscribed initials in brown ink at the
bottom right of the drawings in his collection: “R. V.”
for Raphael, “T. V.” for Timoteo Viti and “G. G. V.”
for Girolamo Genga. Our sheet was first attributed
to Genga and then to Viti as evidenced by the erased
Gs, which can still be seen under the T. and V. written
over them. In 1714, part of this superb collection was
sold to the great French collector Pierre Crozat. In
1824, the collection was further reduced following a
sale to the English dealer Samuel Woodburn (1786-
1853) and several small sales that were less well
documented, such as that to Giuseppe Rossi in 1810
and perhaps another to the painter Jean-Baptiste
Wicar, (1762-1834), whose magnificent sheets by
Raphael are today held in the Lille museum.
