7-13-579) are very close to our drawing and the one in Budapest. It is also useful to compare our sheet with the Adoration of the Magi in the Uffizi in Florence, which also belongs to the very start of Taddeo’s career, around the completion of the façade of the Palazzo Mattei, perhaps earlier, and has the same characteristics: light wash, figures with broad silhouettes and thick legs whose pointed faces are very close to the style of Perino del Vaga. The use in this sheet, as well as in the Budapest one and in ours, of figures seen from the back in the foreground, leaning, sometimes almost kneeling – which would later become common in most of his compositions – may originally be a citation of the shepherds in the two versions of the Adoration of the Shepherds by Polidoro da Caravaggio from the 1520s and now respectively in the Academia Royal de San Fernando in Madrid and the Berlin Kupferstichkabinett du Staatliche Museen (in. 18602). These sheets were copied several times, a proof of their influence and the one in Berlin seems to have prepared a painting that is now lost. The positions of the figures, their corpulence and their pointed fingers seem clearly to have inspired the young Taddeo Zuccaro. Less detailed than the Budapest drawing, our drawing is doubtless a fragment of a larger sheet. Its rapid manner and lack of detail suggest that it is an initial idea for the composition, repeated in greater detail, in the Budapest work. This confirms that Zuccaro must have been preparing a precise project of which nothing <strong>sur</strong>vives today. With its similar style and dimensions, the Uffizi Adoration of the Shepherds 5 is perhaps related to our drawing which shows a sort of pagan right comprising a dance around a fire, whereas the other sheet depicts a Christian adoration. 38
