Notre composition semble avoir été conçue spécialement
pour la série de tapisserie et non provenir
d’une de ses œuvres antérieures puisqu’il n’en
existe pas. Cependant, un tableau signé, mais qui
parait produit par son atelier, est apparu quelques
fois dans le marché de l’art ; il représente le bouffon
qui ouvre la fenêtre devant l’homme qui lit, celui-ci
étant dans l’autre sens (Fig. 3) 2 . Correspond-il
au lot 44 de la vente du 6 juillet 1835 à Gand, un
tableau appartenant au Dr. Johannes Carolus van
Rotterdam et acheté par De Koninck : « Devant
une fenêtre ouverte se trouvent deux personnes
vues à mi-corps et de grandeur naturelle. Le premier
affublé des attribués de la folie rit aux éclats
et d’une manière si naturelle, que le spectateur ne
peut s’empêcher de partager sa joie. Derrière lui
un vieillard lit très attentivement. Cette composition
bizarre et remarquable par la force du coloris
est d’une touche ferme et hardie » ? Et avant cela,
correspond-il à La Folie se raillant de la Philosophie
passé en vente le 27 mars 1786 à Liège ? La répétition
d’une partie seulement de la composition de
notre dessin laisse penser qu’il y peut y avoir eu un
modèle peint – ce qui accréditerait l’inscription du
verso qui mentionne un célèbre tableau détruit en
1793 – ou du moins que notre dessin était connu
de l’atelier.
Le lien avec la tenture des Proverbes implique que
cette scène a l’ambition de transmettre un message
à portée moralisante. La présence du bouf-

However, a signed painting, but which seems
to be by the studio, has appeared a few times on
the market (Fig. 3); it shows the jester who opens
the window in front of the man reading, the latter
being in reverse. 2 Does it correspond to lot 44 of
the auction of 7 th July 1835 in Ghent, a painting
belonging to Dr. Johannes Carolus van Rotterdam
and bought by De Koninck: “In front of an open
window are two people seen half-length, life size.
The first decked with the attributes of madness
laughs out loud and in a way that is so natural
that the viewer could not help joining in his joy.
Behind him, an old man reads very attentively.
This strange and remarkable composition by the
strength of colour has a strong and firm touch”?
And earlier, could it be La Folie se raillant de la
Philosophie (Folly Mocking Philosophy), sold on 27
March 1786 in Liege? The repetition of only a part
of our composition suggests that there might have
been a painted model – which would give credit to
the inscription on the verso of the present drawing
referring to a famous painting destroyed in 1793 –
or at least that our drawing was known to the studio.
The connection with the Proverbs tapestry series
implies that the ambition of this scene is to
communicate a message with a moralising meaning.
