Simon Vouet, the most important artist working in
Paris during the first half of the 17 th century, was
appreciated not only for his large decorative schemes
and his religious paintings, but also for his talent as a
portrait painter that he experimented at court to the
great plea<strong>sur</strong>e of Louis xiii who, as André Félibien
records, “taking plea<strong>sur</strong>e in seeing him work, made
him do [the portraits] of several lords of the Court,
and of the officers of his House, whom he depicted
in pastel.” (Paris, 1685, II, p. 83) This is how Anne
of Austria, Mazarin, the President of Bury, Messrs.
de Montmorency, de la Meilleraye, de Saint-Simon,
de Tréville and Desroches among many others from
the King’s own family and entourage came to be
portrayed by the artist. Following his example, Louis
xiii executed a few beautiful portraits, such as, the
two works preserved in the Bibliothèque Nationale
and the Louvre.
In 1982, Barbara Brejon de Lavergnée knew of
thirty portraits by Vouet in existence, most of them
held in private collections. She illustrated some of
the most picturesque in her Burlington Magazine
article, including the perfumer, Devaux; Daupré,
sergeant of the Bastille; Pépin le maître fou; the
poet Neufgermain and Louis Renard de Saint Malo,
keeper of the King’s arms cabinet 1 . A number of
these portraits are now in museums:. A Portrait
of a Man and a Portrait of a Young Woman in The
Uffizi Museum, Florence (Inv. 2463F, 1042E 2 );
Man Holding a Book, Portrait of a Girl, Probably
Angélique, Simon Vouet’s Daughter, Head of a
Woman with a White Veil and the Portrait of Mazarin
are in the Louvre, the latter a recent acquisition
bearing the same provenance as the present sheet
