nue se faisant peigner (pastel, New York, Metropolitan
Museum of Art).
Degas, it is a chance to place the woman’s body
and its movement, treated simply with a thick but
economic outline of charcoal, in a realistic space.
It is the letter held out by a hand that plays this part
and this single hand, bodyless, emerging in the
composition, recalls the servant without a head
who is styling the young red-headed woman’s hair
in Woman Having Her Hair Combed (pastel, New
York Metropolitan Museum of Art). In other works, it
is by the particular arrangement of everyday objects,
such as brushes and carafes, that Degas resolves
the entanglement of a succession of spaces. Is it a
society letter, an invitation, a love letter? Everything
is possible, but the object intrudes in the intimacy of
the morning. Has a visitor been announced? The care
given to the hair, the most natural of adornments,
here takes on great importance and makes the
image confront questions of social conventions that
were crucial in the spirit of modernity. It is sufficient
to recall the scandal provoked by Gervex’s Rolla to
which, on Degas’s advice, the artist had added the
few pieces of clothing and corsets that suggest the
ins and outs of the scene shown.
This magnificent drawing was given by Degas to
the Swiss artist, Luigi Chialiva, an architect before
becoming a painter, who had met Degas in Paris
and with whom he formed a strong friendship. It
is possible to read that the artist even asked him to
restore some of his paintings, such as the Interior
Scene or the Rape. Chialiva is apparently the
inventor of a fixative that he communicated to Degas
and which “did not alter the velvety appearance of
the pastel nor did it modify its colours” according to
the gallerist Antoine Vuillard. 5
d’origine suisse Luigi Chialiva, architecte, puis
