Vienna 4 , and the Group of Women now in the Uffizi,
Florence (Fig 2) 5 , as well as to some works painted by
Zuccaro during the years of his first artistic maturity
such as the mythological scenes of the Villa Giulia in
Rome (circa 1553-5) 6 or the Parnassus (circa 1555-
7), the latter preserved today at the Galleria Barberini
in Rome but originally painted for the loggia of
the Casino del Bufalo from where it was removed
when, at the end of the 19th Century, the palace was
demolished 7 .
Although the figures depicted in this drawing cannot
be related to those of a <strong>sur</strong>viving painting by Zuccaro,
there are single stylistic motifs that emerge and
which are repeated, albeit with some variations, in
other works by the artist. For instance, the delicately
rendered figure to the left of the composition who
turns towards the viewer, winking with a playful
but intense gaze, reappears in the Parnassus, and
again in a drawing depicting a Group of Kneeling
Women now in the l’Istituto Centrale per la Grafica
in Rome 8 . Similarly, the figure depicted balancing a
large bundle of fabric on her head reappears in the
aforementioned Birth of the Virgin (Fig 1) but turned
in profile. It is perhaps to the exact same project to
which John Gere linked the Viennese sheet – namely
‘fatti di Nostra Dama ……’ 9 and which, according to
Vasari, Zuccaro should have painted in the Cathedral
of Urbino circa 1552 but never completed – that the
present drawing may relate 10 .
