Coming from a poor background and orphaned
at a very early age, François Bonvin had a difficult
childhood. He soon had to work for a living and
could only learn to paint during evening classes held
in the Gobelins studio and the Swiss Academy, and
also by diligently copying at the Louvre, especially
the Dutch paintings. Bonvin began by painting
landscapes and then a few portraits, still lives
and genre scenes. His success at the 1849 Salon
consolidated his reputation in these last two genres,
of which he was considered the master during the
19 th century. Close to Gustave Courbet, Bonvin
participated in the Salon des refusés in 1863 and
rubbed shoulders with the realists, but as he was
never fully part of the movement, he was considered
less seditious. Sincerity and simplicity characterize
the works of the man who was occasionally known
as the “new Chardin”.
In this powerful and monumental composition
Bonvin depicts a young locksmith at work exerting
pres<strong>sur</strong>e on the latch. At his feet, an open bag filled
with tools reinforces the immediacy of an image of
a craftsman at work, drawn from life. The drawing
is noticeable for its large size, but above all for the
intensity given to the representation of a modest
profession. In the 1850s, Bonvin and other realist
artists took a particular interest in Paris’ small street
trades, pursuing a tradition initiated in the 18th
century by Edme Bouchardon in his Cris de Paris,
for example. Noticeably, at the same time, The
Wheat Sifters by Gustave Courbet (Nantes, Musée
des beaux-arts, 1854-1855) or Jean-François Millet’s
