The Cooper (Boston, Museum of Fine Arts, 1848- 1852) demonstrated a similar desire to highlight the worker’s physical strength and the attention he pays to his task. Some 19 th century artists took the theme further into representations of industrialized labour and the worker. Bonvin often asked artisans to pose for him in his workshop. This is the case for our drawing, evidenced by the palette that hangs in the place where you would expect to see a hat and an overcoat. Showing both vigour and subtlety in the mixture of brown and black chalk, the artist evokes the velvety leather of the bag, the shoes and the apron by using the stump tool to marvellous effect; the folds of the coarse work shirt are drawn with bold black chalk marks and for the texture of the wood on the door and the panelling, Bonvin incorporates the laid lines embedded in the paper. Among other examples of drawings that explore the theme of craftsmanship within Bonvin’s oeuvre are La The Spinner 1 , The Scrubber 2 , The Commissionaire 3 , The Apprentice Locksmith 4 , The Water Carrier 5 . All of these works testify to Bonvin’s great mastery at alternating areas of shadow and light to suggest depth and volume. In our drawing, interior space is constructed through shadow play rendered in a remarkable manner with oblique and parallel lines at the top of the doorway and at the bottom on the floor; then again, vertically on the door and on the wall behind the boy. All of these studies are characterized by their desire to represent a profession and not just a person. Craftsmen, whether seated calmly or in action, are depicted absorbed in their tasks or thoughtful and at rest – from behind, in profile or three-quarter-length – but never seen from the front. Gabriel Weisberg, who has remarked the exceptional quality of the treatment of light on this sheet, has also noticed the search for immediacy – the desire to describe a moment, «a segment of life» 6 , thereby anticipating Manet and the Impressionists’ quest for spontaneity and improvisation. Regarding the painting The Ironer 7 executed the same year as our young locksmith, Weisberg explains: “Bonvin, qui d’après Moreau- Nélaton, abhorre la photographie, fait preuve ici, comme Degas et Manet, d’une vision … de photographe.” (Bonvin, who according to Moreau- Nélaton, abhors photography, shows here – like Degas and Manet – a vision… of a photographer.») This remark is even more applicable to our drawing as the use of black and white reinforces the link with photography. 128
