Sigismondo Coccapani, an artist of disparate talents, well versed in hydraulics, optics and architecture that he had studied under Bernardo Buontalenti, was also greatly admired for his drawings. Filippo Baldinucci evokes in fact his activity as a professor of drawing in the private academy created by Piero Strozzi to educate young people of noble families in “all the good arts and sciences (…) that one can desire in a great knight and among which the beautiful art of drawing is not in the last position.” 5 His black and red chalk drawings and the portraits he drew with “a very gracious manner” 6 seem to have been admired by all. The attribution of some sheets, like ours, is based on the obvious graphic similarity that can be established with the manner of his master Ludovico Cardi called Cigoli and also on the coherence of comparison with the autograph drawings such as, for example, the preparatory sheet for the fresco in the cloister of the convent of San Marco, now in the Uffizi. The present drawing was first attributed to Coccapani by Miles Chappell in 1990. The art historian had also connected it to a Martyrdom of Saint Stephen by Cristofano Allori at the Uffizi in Florence, which shows how much attention Coccapani paid to the work of his colleagues and contemporaries. Elisa Acanfora confirmed this attribution and also gave to Coccapani a red and black chalk study in the Uffizi (Inv. 9285 F) previously attributed alternatively to Jacopo Chimenti called Jacopo da Empoli, to Cristofano Allori, and to the school of Cigoli, on the basis of correspondence with the figure of Saint Stephen on our sheet and on comparison with studies of saints in the Louvre, and in the Accademia in Venice. In the present drawing, the exuberance of the composition, the dynamism of the figures, the rapid pen strokes and the touches of colour confirm the experimental and original temperament of the artist. A red chalk copy of this composition with differences by a follower of Coccapani is in the Uffizi (Inv. 9015 F). 62
