notes to chapter 2 273
Trinity and time-eternity relationships (Barth, Die Kirchliche Dogmatik, vol. ii.1, 694–722;
trans., 608–36). On the one hand, he says: “Daß und inwiefern Gott Zeit hat und selber
ist, das muß uns vielmehr gerade an seinem Wesen als der dreieinige Gott deutlich werden”
[the fact that God has and is Himself time, and the extent to which this is so, is necessarily
made clear to us in His essence as a triune God], 694; trans., 615. On the other
hand, despite his talk about the Trinitarian God, he then deals only with Father and Son:
As the creator, God has and gives time (695; trans., 616), and as the Son, God is temporal
(696; trans., 618). Incarnation then means that, in its power as eternity, eternity became
time, i.e., God takes time, God becomes time, God is willingly subjected to time (694;
trans., 616). The threeness is then instead discussed as God’s (not differentiated in a Trinitarian
way) pre-, supra-, and post-temporality; it corresponds to God as God was, is, and
will be. Supra-temporality thereby signifies the accompaniment of the duration of time; it
is God in time; it is the positive relationship between eternity and time (702; trans., 623),
and it is even a merging of time and eternity (703; trans., 624).
Pre-, supra-, and post-temporality are in equal measure God’s eternity and therefore
the living God (720; trans., 638). Eternity as the time-encompassing element (709; trans.,
717) is not a “uniform grey sea” [kein einförmig graues Meer], 721; trans., 639. True eternity
contains the potentiality for time: Without itself being time, eternity is “the absolute basis
of time, and therefore absolute readiness for it” [als schlechthiniger Grund der Zeit zugleich
die schlechthinige Bereitschaft für sie], 696; trans., 618). Kjetil Hafstad also holds the
view that Barth’s doctrine of the Trinity determines his understanding of time (Hafstad,
Wort und Geschichte, 209). He affirms that Barth holds a complicated, though dynamic,
conception of the phenomenon of time (283). He repeatedly emphasizes the dynamic nature
of the time-eternity relationship in Barth (211f., 214, 221, etc.), without denying, however,
the tensions and contradictions in Barth’s concept of time (237ff., 254, 283, etc.).
Among things that are problematic are the changing meanings of the concepts of “absolute”
and “relative” time, as well as the assertion that “new” time is the revelation of what
time actually is.
“Your coming in the darkest night / Makes us children of the light, / Enabling us in
