Type 63 Hod Hill brooches with lateral lugs at the top of the bow.<br />

31 SF BKC 4960(C), V59. Unstratified. Length 29.5 mm, A flattened<br />

fragment of the bow and head. <strong>The</strong> bow is decorated with three<br />

equidistant mouldings. Each lug has a knurled moulding on the bow-side<br />

which continues down to form a marginal moulding on the bow.<br />

Group 5: early sprung brooches (Figs 6 and 7; 37-61)<br />

Type 90 B <strong>Colchester</strong>. A one-piece brooch with simple curved bow, flat<br />

side-wings, and a forward hook to secure the external chord, Sub-type B has an<br />

undecorated bow.<br />

39 SF BKC 1901(C), E1212 L361, Levelling. Period lb. Length 27.0 mm. A<br />

<strong>small</strong> brooch. <strong>The</strong> bottom part of the bow with the catchplate is missing<br />

and the pin has broken away from the spring, which has eight turns. <strong>The</strong><br />

tiny side-wings are grooved. <strong>The</strong> tip of the forward hook is missing.<br />

41 SF BKC 3434(C), K373 L39. Dump. Period 4a/b. Length 26.0 mm. A <strong>small</strong><br />

fragment of a plain bow with hints of the side-wings, the forward hook and<br />

the catchplate.<br />

Type 92 <strong>Colchester</strong> B. A two-piece brooch. <strong>The</strong> spring is secured by<br />

passing the external chord and the axial bar through a lug with two<br />

perforations behind the head. <strong>The</strong> side-wings are semicylindrical. <strong>The</strong>re is a<br />

crest running on a flat ridge down the head to the bow. <strong>The</strong> ridge continues<br />

down the bow, flanked by cavetto mouldings, and may be decorated in various<br />

ways.<br />

42 SF LWC 849(C), A284, Topsail. Early medieval? Length 34.0 mm. A<br />

corroded brooch, the spring and pin of which are missing, <strong>The</strong> bow has<br />

faint marginal grooves and two grooves running from below the crest to
