Type 2 Counters decorated on the obverse with obliquely-cut concentric<br />

grooves (Fig 94; 2264-2279). All have an indentation from a lathe centre.<br />

2264 SF LWC 534. Al 19. Topsoil over tessellated pavement. Probably late<br />

<strong>Roman</strong> but possibly early medieval. Fragment. with four grooves.<br />

Diameter 18.5 mm, thickness 4.0 mm. <strong>The</strong> edges are bevelled.<br />

2265 SF LWC 2495, Ml14. Rampart la. A thin counter with three grooves.<br />

Diameter 19.5 mm, thickness 2.0 mm. <strong>The</strong> edges are bevelled. Both<br />

obverse and reverse have a lathe centre mark, and the reverse bears a<br />

very faintly incised X (Hassall 1978, 478, no 38).<br />

2266 SF BKC 2324, G321. Topsoil? or dump? Period 4 or 5. <strong>The</strong> obverse has<br />

four fine concentric grooves and a fifth outer broad groove. Diameter<br />

19.0 mm, thickness 2.0 mm. On the reverse Mark Hassall has identified a<br />

faint scored line across the diameter with a second line joining it at<br />

right angles.<br />

2267 SF BKC 2704, H7 L2. Topsoil. Post-<strong>Roman</strong>. <strong>The</strong> obverse has two fine<br />

grooves and one outer broad groove set close together same distance from<br />

both lathe centre mark and rim. <strong>The</strong> reverse has two worn areas (see Fig<br />

94, 2238). Diameter 20.0mm, thickness 3.0 mm.<br />

2269 SF BKC 2833(C), H324 (F165). Settlement. Period 5c. Counter with four<br />

concentric grooves on the obverse. <strong>The</strong> reverse bears the inscription VI,<br />

(Hassall 1978. 478. no 35). Diameter 23.5 mm, thickness 3.0 mm.<br />

2270 SF BKC 3342(C), J166 F36. Pit. Period 5b. A piece of bone with<br />

cancellous tissue was used to make this counter which is now very worn.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re appear to have been three concentric grooves on the obverse. <strong>The</strong><br />

reverse has two worn areas (see Fig 94, 2238), Diameter 20.0 mm,<br />

thickness 3.5 mm.<br />

2272 SF BKC 3374(C), J218. Pit material. Modern or Period 5-6? A thin worn<br />

counter with four fine concentric grooves and a fifth outer broad groove<br />

on the obverse. <strong>The</strong> reverse has an inscribed figure X, each member<br />
