ANTLER OFFCUTS OR UNFINISHED OBJECTS<br />

All the pieces are of red deer antler (Fig 182. 4306-4312).<br />

4306 SFLWC 1228. A131. Topsoil over tessellated pavement. Probably late<br />

<strong>Roman</strong> but possibly early medieval. <strong>The</strong> tip of an antler tine which has<br />

been roughly cut across. <strong>The</strong> marks of at least four strokes can be<br />

distinguished. Length 59.0 mm.<br />

4308 SF BKC 5858. G116 F21. Slot for ground-plate. Period 5c. <strong>The</strong> tip of<br />

an antler tine that has been roughly cut across. A slice of the tine has<br />

been removed longitudinally for most of its length including the tip. It<br />

seems to have been taken off with a single knife stroke. Length 71.0 mm.<br />

4309 SF BKC 4467(C), N273 F42. Pit. Period 6+. An offcut section of antler<br />

beam which has been sawn across at both ends. Length 39.0 mm.<br />

4311 SF BKC 4503(C), T2 L2. Destruction debris of Period 3. Period 3(end),<br />

A thin offcut section of antler beam. One end shows ?saw marks. <strong>The</strong><br />

other seems to have been cut with a knife as the face shows <strong>small</strong> groups<br />

of many strokes. with each group at an angle to its neighbours. Length<br />

14.0 mm.
