Pierced pottery counters (Fig 99J 2463-2482)<br />

2464 SF LWC 1084. B199. Uncertain. Probably <strong>Roman</strong>. Wall sherd. Fragment.<br />

<strong>The</strong> edge is ground and the inner surface is slightly abraded. Diameter<br />

85.0 mm. thickness 11.0 mm. Diameter of perforation 10.5 mm. <strong>The</strong> wall<br />

of the hole is smooth but not straight-sided. Grey ware. <strong>Roman</strong>.<br />

2465 SF LWC 638. B239. Medieval. Wall sherd. Fragment. <strong>The</strong> edge is ground<br />

but of irregular diameter and the perforation is off-centre. Diameter<br />

approximately 82.0 mm. thickness 12.0 mm. Diameter of perforation<br />

12.0 mm. <strong>The</strong> wall of the hole is smooth but not straight-sided. Grey<br />

ware. Probably <strong>Roman</strong>.<br />

2466 SF LWC 1144. B321 F70. Cellar backfill. Period 5. Wall sherd.<br />

Fragment. <strong>The</strong> edge is ground but irregular. Diameter approximately<br />

41.5 mm. thickness 5.0 mm. Diameter of perforation 6.0 mm. <strong>The</strong> wall<br />

of the hole is smooth and straight. Grey ware. <strong>Roman</strong>.<br />

2468 SF LWC 3408. L452 F266? Pitt Period 5. Base sherd. Slightly chipped.<br />

<strong>The</strong> edge is ground and the outer surface is abraded. Diameter 39.5 mm.<br />

thickness 7.5 mm. Diameter of perforation 7.0 mm. <strong>The</strong> wall of the<br />

hole is smooth but not straight. Black burnished ware. 2nd century or<br />

later.<br />

2469 SF LWC 3966. R4. Topsoil and machine clearance. Post-<strong>Roman</strong>. Wall<br />

sherd. <strong>The</strong> edge is ground but irregular and both surfaces are abraded.<br />

Diameter 28.0 mm. thickness 5.0 mm. Diameter of perforation 5.0 mm.<br />

<strong>The</strong> wall of the hole is smooth but not straight. Grey ware. <strong>Roman</strong>.<br />

2470 SF LWC 4195. U51 F10. Pit. Medieval. Wall sherd. A rough-out.<br />

Diameter 58.5 mm. thickness 7.5 mm. <strong>The</strong> diameter of the perforation<br />

varies greatly. from 9.5 to 14.0 mm. <strong>The</strong> wall of the hole is smooth<br />

but not straight. <strong>The</strong> manufacture of the hole is likely to have<br />

preceded the roughing-out of the counter. Grey ware. 1st century or<br />
