formed by two converging strokes joined at the top (Hassall 1973, 478,<br />

no 36). Diameter 21.0 mm, thickness 2.0 mm.<br />

2273 SF BKC 4429(C), N496 L106. Clay floors and occupation. Period 5b1.<br />

<strong>The</strong> upper surface is decorated with four fine grooves and a fifth outer<br />

broad groove. <strong>The</strong>re is a single deep cut across the reverse. Diameter<br />

23.0 mm, thickness 3.0 mm.<br />

2275 SF CPS 200(C), 325 F83. Robber trench material. Period 5. A worn<br />

counter, with a very deep oblique outer groove and a <strong>small</strong> almost<br />

horizontal inner groove, producing a 'stepped' effect round the central<br />

area of the disc, which is almost completely pierced by a deep lathe<br />

centre mark. Oval in shape, maximum diameter 20.5 mm, 3.0 mm thick.<br />

2276 SF CPS 357. 561 L75. Topsoil. Period 6. <strong>The</strong> obverse has four fine<br />

concentric grooves and a very broad outer groove. <strong>The</strong> outer edge is<br />

damaged slightly. <strong>The</strong> reverse has two parallel worn areas (see Fig 94.<br />

2238). Diameter 24.0 mm, thickness 3.0 mm.<br />

2278 SF MID 365, C1384 L4. Surface cleaning and topsoil, 4th century and<br />

later. A <strong>small</strong> worn counter with four concentric grooves on the obverse.<br />

Diameter 16.0 mm, thickness 2.5 mm.<br />

2279 SF COC 139. 683 L196. Floor. Period 3. A worn counter. with traces of<br />

four very fine grooves on the surface. apparently not set obliquely. <strong>The</strong><br />

edges are bevelled. <strong>The</strong> counter is stained green. which appears to be an<br />

indication of an early (1st- or 2nd-century) date (see printed text.<br />

section on bone pins of Types 1 and 2), Diameter 17.0 mm. thickness<br />

3.0 mm.<br />

Type 3 Convex counters (Fig 94; 2230-2281),<br />

2280 SF LWC 218. B45 F23. Road ditch. Period 4. <strong>The</strong>re is a lathe centre<br />

mark on the domed obverse. <strong>The</strong> reverse is flat and shows some cancellous<br />

tissue. Diameter 29.0 mm. thickness 7.0 mm.
