Abstract The basic concepts necessary to understand the origin of life<br />

the compartmentalization in protocells approach, and 3) the non-enzymatic<br />

prebiotic metabolism model. Catalysis in mineral surfaces is suggested as the<br />

main mechanism for the possible origin of the central metabolic pathways<br />

in universal metabolism. Candidate catalysts are sulphide minerals (i.e.,<br />

iron sulphide) and semiconductor minerals (i.e., zinc sulphide). A shallowwater<br />

hydrothermal vent system is presented as a model environment where<br />
