CIV2 The City in American Thought
Through an historical Survey, this course will explore changing conceptions of « the city » in American thought, from the
Christian « city on a hill » of the 17th century Pilgrims to the commodofied urban simulacrum of today. By looking at how
Americans have imagined the city, we will focus on ideas about the place of nature, democracy, immigration, industrialism, race,
commodification, suburbia, and the media. Readings will be a combination of fiction (short stories and novels), and important
non-fiction essays on the city. We will also view several films.
LITT2 The Comic novel in Contemporary Britain
This course will provide insight both into contemporary English society and into the nature of literary humor. « Englishness »
has long been a vexed identity category, all the more so in the post-European Union, postcolonial, post-devolution, multi-racial
England of récent décades. English littérature has a long tradition of social critique through humour. In this course we will read
two récent comic novels that provide such social commentary, with particular attention to the nature of England and Englishness,
while also unfolding brillant comic plots. We will use thèse Works both to explore England’s sensé of itself and also to ponder
the form and artistry of the comic novel.
