Alcuni satelliti del BLOCK II sono più pesanti di quelli a peso standard (845 Kg) perché del payload farà parte il modulo NUDET (Nuclear Detection); la lifetime di esercizio è stimata di 7.5 anni; su tutti i satelliti del BLOCK II è attivabile la SA (Selective Availability). Alcune delle caratteristiche funzionali fondamentali di un satellite GPS sono le seguenti: • ricevere ed immagazzinare 1’informazione trasmessa dal segmento 221
222 Capitolo 6 – Il GPS di controllo, cioè dagli operatori del sistema; • effettuare elaborazioni a bordo per mezzo di un proprio microprocessore; • conservare il tempo ad elevata precisione mediante un banco oscillatori (2 al cesio e 2 al rubidio) installati a bordo del satellite; • trasmettere l’informazione all’utente mediante vari segnali; • manovrare per mezzo di ”thrusters” controllati dagli operatori del sistema. c) - SATELLITI GPS – BLOCK IIA N.
