Breed<strong>in</strong>g history<br />
The breed Savoiarda is an old local mounta<strong>in</strong> breed of unknown orig<strong>in</strong>.<br />
The breed was formerly spread all over the whole Alp<strong>in</strong>e<br />
region. The present area of distribution is <strong>in</strong> the Prov<strong>in</strong>ce of Tor<strong>in</strong>o<br />
(Piedmont) <strong>in</strong> the valleys di Susa, Pellice, Chisone, Lanzo and the<br />
surround<strong>in</strong>gs of Giaveno.<br />

Description of the Breed<br />
Savioarda is a medium-sized sheep with rams weigh<strong>in</strong>g 80 kg on<br />
average. The wool is dirty white. Animals have black spots on face<br />
and legs. Rams and most ewes present horns; those of the rams are<br />
spiral. Ears are narrow and slightly hang<strong>in</strong>g, the head has a Roman<br />
profile.<br />
Special Performances<br />
Ma<strong>in</strong> use is mutton and wool. Milk lambs are weaned at 12 to 15<br />
kg; wethers fattened on pastures are produced, too. Milk<strong>in</strong>g of<br />
ewes cont<strong>in</strong>ues after wean<strong>in</strong>g for the production of cheese with<br />
cow milk as additive. Females lamb three times <strong>in</strong> two years. 30 %<br />
of lambs are born as tw<strong>in</strong>s.<br />
Support<br />
There is no special support for this breed. In the year 2000, the<br />
WWF Piedmont bought 25 animals to set up a herd.<br />
Present Importance<br />
The orig<strong>in</strong>al dual-purpose sheep for mutton and milk is extremely<br />
threatened through crossbreed<strong>in</strong>g with Italian and French mutton<br />
breeds. Only very few pure-bred animals are left. There is urgent<br />
need for action to set up a conservation programme.<br />
