Zerasca (Nostrana)<br />
Breed<strong>in</strong>g history<br />
Die orig<strong>in</strong> of Zerasca is not clearly known. The breed has descended,<br />
however, from a breed from the Appen<strong>in</strong>e Mounta<strong>in</strong>s. For a long<br />
time, however, the breed has been very isolated. Around 1940, the<br />
breed was crossbred with Massese sheep. Its present area of distribution<br />
is <strong>in</strong> Liguria <strong>in</strong> Massa-Carra Prov<strong>in</strong>ces close to the community<br />
of Zeri (MS).<br />

Present Importance<br />
Today, wool and mutton of the Zerasca are used. Lambs are sold.<br />
The milk of the ewes is used for cheese production.<br />

Description of the Breed<br />
Zerasca are of medium size, with an average weight of rams of 70<br />
kg. The head is light with straight profile. Ears are of medium size<br />
and slightly hang or stick out horizontally. The wool is purely white<br />
and of medium length. Animals have irregular grey and reddishbrown<br />
spots on their face and legs. Both sexes are polled, animals<br />
with horns occur, too.<br />
