Frabosana (Rastela, Roaschina, Roaseia, Roascia)
Breeding history
Frabosana is an Alpine sheep breed that belongs to the Semi Lop
Eared Group. Originally, the breed was divided in two types: the
Frabosana type and the slightly larger Roaschina type. The breed is
found in Cuneo and Torino Provinces in different valleys, in the valleys
of Monregalesi and the Ligurian Alps, and in the surroundings
of Alessandrino.

Description of the Breed
Frabosana is a medium-sized sheep with Roman nose. The very
coarse wool of the Frabosana is yellowish, with various yellowishbrown
spots on head and on the extremities. Rams present spiral
horns close to the head. The horns of the ewes are sickle-shaped.
The type Raoschina is characterised by its larger built and higher
milk performance. Extremities are fine, head, belly and legs do not
present wool.
Support
The EU supports the conservation of Frabosana-sheep. Through
EU-regulation 1257/99, the breed receives funding. It is listed in the
national register (April 2001) of ASSONAPA for endangered goat
and sheep breeds.
Present Importance
Breeding tries to improve the milk yield and the fertility with more
twin births. A special cheese "Sola” is produced as regional product.
During the summer the animals graze pastures at high altitudes,
where they are also milked. During the winter is common to
house animals and let them graze changing pastures in the plains.
