Schwarzbraunes Bergschaf (Pecora Nero-bruna)
Breeding history
The breed Black-Brown Mountain developed in Italy through crossbreeding
with Bergamasca sheep with the original Tyrolese highmountain
breed, the Steinschaf. The breed is found in the whole
Alpine region: in parts of Bavaria, the valleys of South Tyrol, the
Engadine, Val Venosta, Val d’ Ultimo, Passira and Senales.

Present Importance
The breed is particularly important because of its good adaptability,
its ability to move safely and its robustness. This and its high fertility
combined with good maternal instincts make the breed particularly
suitable for lamb production, the management of Alpine
pastures during the summer months and for pasture after harvest
in the valleys. The deep brown wool is suited very well for the production
of different wool products.
Description of the Breed
The breed Black-Brown Mountain is of medium size, rams weigh 80
to 100kg on average. The head is without wool, narrow and with
Roman nose. Lop ears are broad and long. Both sexes are polled.
The wool with fineness of 32 to 36 micron is brown to cognac,
animals are sheared twice per year.

Special Performances
The breed is characterised by a very good adaptation to climate and
feed at high altitudes. The animals are non-seasonal, very fertile and
