Breed<strong>in</strong>g history<br />
The breed Black-Brown Mounta<strong>in</strong> developed <strong>in</strong> Italy through crossbreed<strong>in</strong>g<br />
with Bergamasca sheep with the orig<strong>in</strong>al Tyrolese highmounta<strong>in</strong><br />
breed, the Ste<strong>in</strong>schaf. The breed is found <strong>in</strong> the whole<br />
Alp<strong>in</strong>e region: <strong>in</strong> parts of Bavaria, the valleys of South Tyrol, the<br />
Engad<strong>in</strong>e, Val Venosta, Val d’ Ultimo, Passira and Senales.<br />

Present Importance<br />
The breed is particularly important because of its good adaptability,<br />
its ability to move safely and its robustness. This and its high fertility<br />
comb<strong>in</strong>ed with good maternal <strong>in</strong>st<strong>in</strong>cts make the breed particularly<br />
suitable for lamb production, the management of Alp<strong>in</strong>e<br />
pastures dur<strong>in</strong>g the summer months and for pasture after harvest<br />
<strong>in</strong> the valleys. The deep brown wool is suited very well for the production<br />
of different wool products.<br />
Description of the Breed<br />
The breed Black-Brown Mounta<strong>in</strong> is of medium size, rams weigh 80<br />
to 100kg on average. The head is without wool, narrow and with<br />
Roman nose. Lop ears are broad and long. Both sexes are polled.<br />
The wool with f<strong>in</strong>eness of 32 to 36 micron is brown to cognac,<br />
animals are sheared twice per year.<br />

Special Performances<br />
The breed is characterised by a very good adaptation to climate and<br />
feed at high altitudes. The animals are non-seasonal, very fertile and<br />
