Istriana (Carsolina, Primorska, Istrarska mljecna, Istrian Milk, Dalmatian Karst)
Breeding history
The breed Istrian belongs to the Bergamasca group. It is found in
the Carso area (Karst, Northern Adriatic Sea). Traces of the breed
date back into Roman times. Breeding basis are breeds form Apulia,
Southern Italy, Syria and the Balkans. The present area of distribution
is the high plateau of Carso in Friuli Venezia Giulia region. The
same breed is found in Slovenia and Croatia.
Related Breeds
Lamon (I), Istrian pramenka (Slovenia), Istarska Ovca (Croatia).
It is listed in the national register (April 2001) of ASSONAPA for
endangered goat and sheep breeds.
Present Importance
The breed is very well adapted to the meagre pastures of the Karst
and the coast. It moves safely in this environment, supported by its
hard claws. Today, animals are mainly housed during wintertime.
Breeding aims to conserve genetic variability, to increase the milk
yield and to optimise the suitability of the milk for cheese-making.
Description of the Breed
Istrian is a medium-sized breed. Rams weigh 65 kg on average. The
head has a strong Roman profile, the short ears stick out at the side.
Rams carry spiral horns. Ewes are often polled. The wool is white
with black or brown dots. There are, however, also entirely black or
brown animals. The udder shows coloured dots as well. The belly
and the legs are not woolly, the claws are black or grey.
