Breed<strong>in</strong>g history<br />
Brown Mounta<strong>in</strong> descended from White Mounta<strong>in</strong>, which has its<br />
orig<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> the breed Bergamasca. Amongst animals of this breed,<br />
brown and black animals occurred that were summed up to an own<br />
breed. Foundation of the herdbook <strong>in</strong> 1996.<br />

Description of the Breed<br />
It is a medium-sized early-matur<strong>in</strong>g brown sheep <strong>in</strong> the light type of<br />
White Mounta<strong>in</strong>. The head is narrow, with Roman profile and polled<br />
with long and broad lop ears. It has strong legs with tight ankles<br />
and hard claws. H<strong>in</strong>d legs have a slight ankle. The wool has a regular<br />
cognac to dark-brown colour and is slightly frizzy with a f<strong>in</strong>eness<br />
of C-D (32 to 36 micron). The breed is non-seasonal and very fertile.<br />
First cover<strong>in</strong>g at 8 months.<br />
Support<br />
Brown Mounta<strong>in</strong> is supported with<strong>in</strong> the frame of the ÖPUL B programmes<br />
with 21.80 Euro per ewe and year 65.41 Euro per ram<br />
and year.<br />
Special Performances<br />
Approx. 4% of all Austrian sheep is Brown Mounta<strong>in</strong>. It is ma<strong>in</strong>ly<br />
kept <strong>in</strong> Austria’s mounta<strong>in</strong> regions. In former times, it was widely<br />
spread <strong>in</strong> the whole Alp<strong>in</strong>e region, today, it is found <strong>in</strong> Tyrol,<br />
Salzburg, Styria and Lower Austria. The breed is used for landscape<br />
management and meat and wool production <strong>in</strong> the Alp<strong>in</strong>e<br />
region.<br />
