Bovška ovca (Trentarka)
Breeding history
Bovška ovca is an autochthone sheep breed that developed in the
Upper Soča Valley. It is named after the town Bovec. The breed
belongs to the Steinschaf group and descended from Zaupel. Since
the 1970ies, endangered through continuous crossbreeding with
East Friesian Milk. Herdbook foundation in 1983.

Description of the Breed
A small to medium-sized milk breed with short and thin legs, a finely
structured head with straight nose and short ears. Both sexes are
polled in Slovenia. The forehead is partly woolly, the belly woolless.
Long woolly tail. The rough fleece with fibre thickness of 44 μm is
mainly white. Approx. 30% of the animals are brown or black. The
breed is non-seasonal with lambing intervals of 356 days. Age at
first lambing is 15-17 months.

supported with 18 Euro per animal and year.
Present Importance
The breed is mainly kept to produce milk for Bovec cheese, but also
for its meat and wool. Main area of distribution is the Triglav
National Park where animals are mostly kept under traditional,
extensive conditions. They stay on Alpine pastures during the summer
and sometimes in the valleys. Since 1994, there has been a
conservation program in cooperation with the University of
Domžale.
