Ciavenasca (Gavenasca)
Breeding history
The origin of Ciavenasca sheep is unknown. However they are considered
an original breed from Lombardy, in particular from the Val
Bregaglia in Sondrio Province, Val S. Giacomo and the Chiavenna
plain.
Description of the Breed
Ciavenasca is a medium-sized breed of short and roundish built. The
head is short and compact, the nose has a slightly Roman shape.
Both sexes are polled, the ears are small and stick out. The sheep
belong to the group of coarsewool sheep breeds. The wool is yellowish-white,
brown spots may also be present.
Present Importance
In 1983, 2500 animals were still recorded. In 2001, the breed was
considered extinct. There is urgent need for action to include the
last remaining animals into a conservation programme.

Special Performances
Ciavenasca are important for meat production. Lambs are slaughtered
with 10 to 12 kg life weight. The animals have adapted very
well to mountain and high-mountain conditions.

At present, there is no support for the breed.
