Brigasca<br />
Breed<strong>in</strong>g history<br />
Brigasca is an old local breed, found <strong>in</strong> the border region between<br />
Liguria, Piedmont and Provence. The orig<strong>in</strong> of this Alp<strong>in</strong>e breed is<br />
probably similar to Frabosana and Langhe. The ma<strong>in</strong> area of distribution<br />
today is <strong>in</strong> the Alp<strong>in</strong>e border region to France <strong>in</strong> the Valle d’<br />
Arroshia and the Valle Argent<strong>in</strong>a.<br />

Description of the Breed<br />
These Alp<strong>in</strong>e sheep are of medium height. Rams weigh on average<br />
60 to 70 kg. The coarse wool is white to cream-coloured. The head<br />
is small, with a slight Roman profile and has reddish-brown spots<br />
which are also found along the legs. Lop ears are of medium length.<br />
80 % of the rams carry convoluted horns, 80 % of the ewes sickleshaped<br />
horns.<br />
Present Importance<br />
The present importance of the breed is found <strong>in</strong> its good adaptation<br />
to the prevail<strong>in</strong>g climatic conditions. An important production<br />
unit is – besides meat and wool production – the production of<br />
cheese. The three Ligurian cheese types Sora, Toma and Brus are<br />
made of the high-quality milk of the sheep.<br />
