Breeding history
The origin of the sheep breed Bergamasca is not exactly known. The
breed is related to both Alpine breeds Bergamasca and Lamon. The
area of distribution is found in Venetia region and stretches from La
Lessinai plateau close to the mountain Lessini down into the Po lowlands,
particularly into the Val Dìllasi and the community of
Treganno.

Description of the Breed
The basic colour of the breed is white, reddish-brown spots may,
however, occur at all parts of the body. Head and legs are not covered
with wool. The ewes are polled, single horned rams may occur.
With an average weight of 60 kg for adult males, the breed is of
medium size. The tail is long, lop ears are of medium length ad
slightly protruding.
Population numbers are slightly increasing. The University of Torino
accompanies the breed scientifically.
Present Importance
The present breeding aim is the conservation of resistance, frugality
and fertility. The lambs grow fast and meat is the most important
product. The milk can be used commercially, too. The wool yield is
2.5 to 3 kg for this medium-sized breed.
