Mourerous (Peone, Giullaume)<br />
Breed<strong>in</strong>g history<br />
Mourerous is found <strong>in</strong> Provence-Alpes, Côtes d`Azur, the Rhône<br />
Alpes and Corsica. Ma<strong>in</strong> area of distribution was the Provence<br />
around 1900. A herdbook was founded <strong>in</strong> 1983. 70% of the<br />
animals are used for purebreed<strong>in</strong>g. Erroneously, Mourerous sheep<br />
are often confused with Rouge de Roussillon.<br />

Present Importance<br />
Ma<strong>in</strong> use of Mourerous is wool and milk. Their efficient use allows<br />
keep<strong>in</strong>g them on full-time farms. Despite slowly <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g population<br />
numbers, the breed is potentially endangered. There are more<br />
than 62 herds with animals of this breed which is at present not<br />
considered to be endangered. More than 10% of ewes and 5% of<br />
rams are crossbred with other breeds. Approx. 90% of the animals<br />
are used for purebreed<strong>in</strong>g. Wool f<strong>in</strong>eness is 25 micron.<br />
Description of the Breed<br />
Mourerous is a medium sized meat breed. The weight of the rams<br />
is 90 kg. Its fleece is brown and white. Head and legs are duncoloured<br />
to reddish, with a white spot on the head. Both sexes are<br />
polled.<br />
Special Performances<br />
Both meat and wool of the Mourerous are used. Wool <strong>den</strong>sity is<br />
very high. The animals are able to move safely <strong>in</strong> the mounta<strong>in</strong>s,<br />
very robust and well adapted to cold and draught so that they can<br />
be kept outside all year. Age at first lamb<strong>in</strong>g is 21 months. The<br />
breed is non-seasonal. Daily <strong>in</strong>crease of fatten<strong>in</strong>g lambs is 265g/day<br />
on average.<br />
Support<br />
Mourerous are supported through EU-regulation 1257/99 with 6.50<br />
Euro per animal and year. Sperm of 11 rams is cryoconserved. S<strong>in</strong>ce<br />
1996, the FDGEDA has been accompany<strong>in</strong>g a support programme.<br />
