Thônes et Marthod (Mouton Noir de Fumex)
Breeding history
Thônes-Marthoddescended from a breed from the Mediterranean
region; most probably from the former Kingdom of Piémont-
Sardaigne. The relationship with breed from the Balkans is obvious.
They are said to be also related to the Central European breeds. The
breed received its name from Mr. Marthod (Albertville) and
Mr.Thones (Haute Savoie) who owned all livestock in the area
around 1870. Formerly, another branch of the breed, Noir de
Fumex, was kept in the area around Fumex.

Description of the Breed
The fleece of the breed is unicoloured white. Its head is fine with
slight Roman profile. Mouth and nose are black; animals have black
spots around their eyes. The horns are broad and spiral upwards.
The forehead is woolly, the nose broad. Some ewes are unicoloured
black except for the white tip of the tail.
13 to 18 months. When the ram remains in the herd, the non-seasonal
ewes lamb 3 times in two years. Daily gain is 250 g.
Support
The breed is financially supported through EU-regulation 1257/99.
Moreover, the CEE pays a milk sheep subsidy. The "Association
Parade" conserves a small group of Thones-Marthod. Since 1974,
there has been a conservation programme for the breed. The
"Bureau de Ressources Génétiques" supported a project for the
conservation of this breed already in 1997/98.
Present Importance
The milk is suited to produce best-quality cheese. Only 50 % of
Thônes-Marthodis at present used for pure breeding. Population
numbers have been decreasing for some years. The breed is crossbred
with others to produce meat, but also for higher milk production.
Some ewes are still very fertile at more than 10 years of
age. The reproduction rate of Thônes-Marthod is 150 %. With
more than 2500 ewes, they are
at present not considered to be
endangered.
