Bela Kraj<strong>in</strong>a pramenka (Belokranjska pramenka)<br />
Breed<strong>in</strong>g history<br />
The breed belongs to the autochthonous breeds of Slovenia and<br />
was orig<strong>in</strong>ally found on both sides of the river Kolpa, amongst<br />
others <strong>in</strong> the Karst Mounta<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> the region of Bela Kraj<strong>in</strong>a. A herdbook<br />
for the breed is kept.<br />

Description of the Breed<br />
Small sheep with long, coarse and fr<strong>in</strong>ged wool. Fleece colour is<br />
ma<strong>in</strong>ly white, characteristic feature of this breed are black po<strong>in</strong>ts or<br />
dots on the face and the legs. Woolly parts of the body are seldom<br />
spotted. The tail is unusually long and reaches down to only few cm<br />
above the ground. Some rams have extremely large and wound<br />
horns. Females occasionally carry horns; they are, however, shorter.<br />
Seasonal breed with age at first lamb<strong>in</strong>g of 14-16 months.<br />
Present Importance<br />
Breed<strong>in</strong>g concentrates <strong>in</strong> the areas around Adlešiči,ˇ Crnomelj,<br />
Semič und V<strong>in</strong>ica. Animals are mostly kept by hobby or part-time<br />
farmers and used for pasture management and meat production.<br />
They stay on pastures dur<strong>in</strong>g the summer, dur<strong>in</strong>g w<strong>in</strong>tertime they<br />
are housed for approx. 6 months. S<strong>in</strong>ce 1997, there has been a<br />
conservation programme <strong>org</strong>anised by the Department of Animal<br />
Breed<strong>in</strong>g of the University of Ljubljana. Population numbers are<br />
<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
