Weißes <strong>Alpen</strong>schaf<br />
Breed<strong>in</strong>g history<br />
The breed Swiss White Alp<strong>in</strong>e developed from different local breeds<br />
(amongst others Luze<strong>in</strong> and Tavetsch). Improvement with German<br />
Mer<strong>in</strong>o and Ile de France for higher body weight and improved carcass.<br />
After the restructur<strong>in</strong>g of breeds <strong>in</strong> 1938, the breed became<br />
more popular. Herdbook foundation <strong>in</strong> 1900.<br />

Description of the Breed<br />
Large-framed white sheep breed. The woolly straight head is of<br />
medium length with ears stick<strong>in</strong>g out horizontally and straight nose.<br />
Polled. Good muscles and full meaty legs. Strong extremities. The<br />
fleece is <strong>den</strong>se and tightly stapled with a f<strong>in</strong>eness of F2-3 and even<br />
f<strong>in</strong>er. Fertile and non-seasonal. Two to three lamb<strong>in</strong>gs are aimed at.<br />
Age at first lamb<strong>in</strong>g is 18 months.<br />
Present Importance<br />
With approx. 50% of all herdbook animals, the breed is the most<br />
important one <strong>in</strong> Switzerland. Animals are ma<strong>in</strong>ly kept by part-time<br />
farmers for quality lamb production, f<strong>in</strong>e wool and for pasture<br />
management. 70 % of the animals stay on Alp<strong>in</strong>e pastures dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
the summer, hous<strong>in</strong>g dur<strong>in</strong>g w<strong>in</strong>tertime lasts approx. 4 months.<br />
Approx. 15% of the animals are kept on w<strong>in</strong>ter pastures.<br />

Special Performances<br />
The White Alp<strong>in</strong>e is well adapted to the production and site conditions<br />
