Biellese<br />
Breed<strong>in</strong>g history<br />
The breed Biellese has its orig<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> the Sudan, with lots of resemblance<br />
to the Bergamasca. It also belongs to the lop-eared Alp<strong>in</strong>e<br />
group. Two types exist: the Biellese di Vercelli and the Biellese<br />
Piemontese Alp<strong>in</strong>a. Areas of distribution are Piedmont, Aosta Valley<br />
and Lombardy.<br />

Bergamasca (I)<br />
Description of the Breed<br />
The unicoloured white animals bear considerable resemblance to<br />
the Bergamasca. They also have long and meaty lop ears, the forehead<br />
is slightly woolly. The breed is sturdy, with a ram body weight<br />
of 100 kg, they belong to the heavy Alp<strong>in</strong>e breeds. The wool is long<br />
and hang<strong>in</strong>g, it makes a part at the back of the body.<br />
Special Performances<br />
Adaptation to rough mounta<strong>in</strong> climatic conditions is characteristic<br />
for this robust breed. Good growth of lambs and good taste of the<br />
meat make the breed suitable for the production of lamb and mutton.<br />
Milk yield of the ewes is between 120 kg to 140 kg.<br />
Present Importance<br />
Biellese sheep graze the high-mounta<strong>in</strong> pastures and slopes.<br />
Dur<strong>in</strong>g the summer, the animals stay on an Alp<strong>in</strong>e pastures and<br />
graze less yield<strong>in</strong>g sites at lower locations. Sheep are housed for 2<br />
to 6 months (sometimes/not always). The meat is marketed well,<br />
the wool is used for mattresses and cushions. Biellese sheep are<br />
also <strong>in</strong>tegrated <strong>in</strong>to tourism programmes <strong>in</strong> Piemont.<br />
