Breed<strong>in</strong>g history<br />
Tiroler Bergschaf belongs to the group of Alp<strong>in</strong>e sheep which <strong>org</strong><strong>in</strong>ated<br />
<strong>in</strong> Austria after the Second World War through crossbreed<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Ste<strong>in</strong>schaf and Bergamasca. White Ste<strong>in</strong>schaf animals were bought<br />
from Schnals valley for that purpose. Distribution: Trent, Bolzano,<br />

Description of the Breed<br />
Tiroler Bergschaf is an unicoloured white sheep, both rams and<br />
ewes are polled. The lop ears of the sheep are meaty and long.<br />
Animals are sturdy and compact.<br />
Present Importance<br />
The sheep are very robust and best adapted to rough mounta<strong>in</strong> climate<br />
and high precipitation. Ra<strong>in</strong>water can flow easily of the longgrow<strong>in</strong>g<br />
wool. Animals move safely <strong>in</strong> high-mounta<strong>in</strong> terra<strong>in</strong>, they<br />
are resistant and even graze the highest pastures <strong>in</strong> the mounta<strong>in</strong><br />
region. Their high fertility, l<strong>in</strong>ked to age at first-lamb<strong>in</strong>g of 15<br />
months, makes them particularly suitable for fat lamb production.<br />

Special Performances<br />
Tiroler Bergschaf are non-seasonal and lamb twice per year <strong>in</strong> most<br />
cases. Ewes are very fertile and have a marked maternal <strong>in</strong>st<strong>in</strong>ct.<br />
Lambs are fast-grow<strong>in</strong>g and very vital.<br />
