Grivette
Breeding history
Grivette developed from an autochthonous breed in Bas
Dauphiné. They are found in the Auvergne and Langedoc-
Roussillon. A herdbook was founded in 1960. Only 60% of the
female animals are used for pure-breeding today.
Present Importance
Grivette are meat sheep. Population numbers have been decreasing
from 20 000 to 15 000 animals. The breed is not considered
to be endangered. 40% of the ewes are crossbred with other
breeds to improve their performance.

Description of the Breed
Grivette is a medium-framed sheep with average ram weight of
approx. 100 kg. The wool is white, head and legs have brown
dots. The breed is very resistant, very fertile and efficient. Both
sexes are polled.

Special Performances
Grivette are mainly used for meat production. The animals stay on
pastures during the summer, and are housed for 4-6 months
during wintertime. The medium gain is 25g/day for rams and
