Villnösser (Fiemmese, Tingola)
Breeding history
The breeding history of the Villnösser already started in the 18th
century, when it was bred from Bergamasca and Paduan sheep. The
Carinthian type was widely spread for a long time in Friuli Region,
Carinthia and Slovenia. Today, animals are mainly found in the
Dolomite valleys Val Badia, Val di Funes and d’Ega and in Trento
Province as well as in the valleys Val di Fiemme and Valsugana.
Related Breeds
Lamon (I), Carinthian (A), Jezersko-solčavska pasma (SL)
EU-regulation 1257/99 since 1999. The breed is listed in the national
register (April 2001) of ASSONAPA for endangered goat and
sheep breeds.
Present Importance
The Villnösser is very well adapted to the conditions in rainy mountain
regions. It has hard claws and is safe on its feet. The meat is of
very good quality. An initiative in Villnöss produces wool products
from different mountain sheep. Breeding animals are exchanged
with populations in other countries.
Description of the Breed
The Villnösser is of medium height with an average weight of rams
of 90 kg. Wool and legs are purely white, eyes have a large black
frame, the long lop ears are also black at the sides. The head is long
and fine with a Roman nose. Rams and ewes are always polled. The
fleece hangs down and parts in the middle.
