Istrska pramenka (Istrijanka)<br />
Breed<strong>in</strong>g history<br />
Istrian pramenka is an autochthonous sheep of the Slovenian and<br />
Istrian Karst region. Because the breed is seriously endangered, conservation<br />
programs have been set up <strong>in</strong> both countries. A herdbook<br />
is kept for the breed.<br />
Description of the Breed<br />
A rather large-framed milk sheep with high and correctly formed<br />
udder with large teats on long and strong legs. It has a narrow<br />
Roman head, long neck and ears that stick out. Legs and belly are<br />
woolless; other parts of the body are often covered by rather shaggy<br />
fleece. The wool is coarse and unicoloured. The exterior varies<br />
considerably with white, black, spotted, short-eared, horned and<br />
polled animals occurr<strong>in</strong>g. The breed is seasonal. Age at first lamb<strong>in</strong>g<br />
is 17-20 months, lamb<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>terval 370 days.<br />
Present Importance<br />
Istrian pramneka is ma<strong>in</strong>ly important as milk sheep for part-time<br />
farmers, its meat and wool, however, are also used. It is found <strong>in</strong><br />
Senožeče, Obrov and Črni kal (South-West Slovenia). Dur<strong>in</strong>g summer,<br />
sheep are used for landscape management. Hous<strong>in</strong>g dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
w<strong>in</strong>tertime lasts for approx. 6 months. The breed is rated as<br />
seriously endangered. A conservation programme has been started<br />
<strong>in</strong> 1994.<br />

Special Performances<br />
Described as resistant with special hard<strong>in</strong>ess. Characteristic for the<br />
breed are its ground-cover<strong>in</strong>g steps and the adaptation to rocky<br />
