Merinolandschaf
Breeding history
German Merinos (formerly also Württemberger Schaf) developed in
Southern Germany through improvement of local sheep breeds,
mainly the Niederrhein Marsch, with Merinos from Spain and
Southern France in the 19th century.

Description of the Breed
A medium-sized to large-framed white sheep with wedge-shaped
long head, typical mop of hair ("Schaupe”) and broad and slightly
hanging ears. The breast is broad and sufficiently arching forward.
The body is long, with firm and broad back, good rib arch and long,
deep flanks. The hindquarters is characterised by a long and broad
pelvis and meaty inner and outer legs. Skin folds are undesirable.
The white wool has Merino character with 26 to 28 micron.
Present Importance
German Merino is the dominating breed in Southern and Middle
Germany. Around two thirds of the entire sheep stock in Bavaria
are German Merino. The breed is best suited for large-scale landscape
management. High-altitude pastures at favoured sites are
sometimes used for summer grazing. The farms are mainly located
outside the Alpine and pre-Alpine region of Bavaria. Main use is
lamb production and landscape management. Most animals are
kept by full-time and part-time farmers.
