Préalpes du Sud (Race de Savournon, de Sahune, de Quint)
Breeding history
The breed Préalpes du Sud is found in Drôme, in Hautes-Alpes,
Alpes-de-Hautes-Provence and Vaucluse. One version of its history
of origin says that it developed from a Syrian breed. According to
another version, the breed developed in the Pyrenees where it had
another name. A herdbook has been kept since 1947.
Present Importance
70 % of purebred ewes are used for breeding. 5% of the animals
are inseminated artificially. At present, there are 750 herds of
Prealpes du Sud. Population numbers have been decreasing slightly
during the last 20 years. Today, there are still 220,000 animals
left.
Description of the Breed
Prealpes du Sud is unicoloured white and polled. The head is fine
and longish, the forehead broader with fine ears of medium length.
The breast is broad with rounded sides. The animals are heavy and
short with short and well-developed legs. Rams weigh up to 85 kg.
An increasing number of ewes is mated with rams of different
breeds.

Special Performances
Main use of the breed is meat and wool. It is well adapted to dry
regions, especially to the vegetation in the Garrigue. Sheep with
better wool graze on mountain pastures during the summer. The
