Vares<strong>in</strong>a<br />
Breed<strong>in</strong>g history<br />
Vares<strong>in</strong>a is an autochthon breed, which has probably common orig<strong>in</strong>s<br />
with Bergamasca sheep. It is found <strong>in</strong> Lombardy, <strong>in</strong> the Prov<strong>in</strong>ce<br />
of Varese, <strong>in</strong> the communities of Travedono and Biandronno.<br />

Present Importance<br />
As the breed is threatened by ext<strong>in</strong>ction, there is acute need for<br />
action. Some <strong>in</strong>itiatives wish to support the breed because of their<br />
regional importance. Traditionally, animals are kept <strong>in</strong> transhumance<br />
systems throughout the year. Dur<strong>in</strong>g w<strong>in</strong>tertime, small amounts<br />
of hay are fed.<br />
Description of the Breed<br />
Vares<strong>in</strong>a conforms to the Bergamasca sheep. The animals are of<br />
medium size and medium weight. Rams weigh 85 to 90 kg on average.<br />
Wool, head and extremities are unicoloured white, the wool<br />
is of medium length and half-closed. The long head with Roman<br />
nose is more pronounced for rams than for females. Both sexes are<br />
polled. Lop ears are broad and long.<br />

Special Performances<br />
Vares<strong>in</strong>a are bred with focus on mutton and wool production<br />
Wean<strong>in</strong>g weight of the lambs is 18 to 20 kg. The milk is exclusively<br />
used for lamb rear<strong>in</strong>g. Wool performance is 3,0 kg to 3,5 kg.<br />
Wool is of medium quality.<br />
