construction regulations. An updated
approach of sustainable architectural
acoustics that takes urban sounds
as design elements to enrich urban
soundscapes and control noise pollution
could become useful in order to
reach healthier environments and facilitate
the path for environmental policy
such as the UN Sustainable Development
Goals for 2030.
To quote R. Murray Schafer (1977), one
of the pioneers of soundscape research:
“It devolves on us now to invent
a subject which we might call acoustic
design, an interdiscipline in which musicians,
acousticians, psychologists, sociologists
and others would study the
world soundscape together in order to
make intelligent recommendations for
its improvement (…) Cross-cultural evidence
from around the world must be
carefully assembled and interpreted.
New methods of educating the public
to the importance of environmental
sound must be devised”. -
