2 THE BACKGROUND: URBAN
PLANNING STRUCTURES
Promoting gender-equal cities relies on ruling urban planning
structures where the protagonists are mainly white cisgender
men, at least those in public. White cis-men influenced the whole
urban planning sector. Leslie Kern states in her book “Feminist
City” that “white men cite white men” (Kern, L. 2020) which
in turn reproduces sexism, especially in urban planning. It is
mandatory when developing gender-neutral cities to introduce
women and gender minorities as participants and as leaders
into the planning process (Cf. Johnston-Zimmermann, K. 2017).
3 THE APPROACH: FEMINIST,
EMPOWERING, AND SOCIALLY
RESILIENT CITIES
The challenge of urban planning and
design is to change the basis, the environment,
and the living space of society
into a feminist, empowering, and
socially resilient space. One should
not underestimate the power of urban
planners and designers. While those
are still dominated by men and sexist
thinking, women and gender minorities
suffer from a patriarchal city.
The collage shows how women and
gender minorities could operate cities
in both leading positions and participation
processes in the future. Their presence
in public spaces should be supported
with measures for safety and
accessibility. The aim is not to plan a
counter-project that defines cities differently
but an appropriate solution that
combines both the ruling urban structures
and new inclusive aspects.
