/ As part of the structural restructuring, a center for orthopedics
and trauma surgery is to be established in the existing
central operating room of Magdeburg University Hospital.
Scientists from Fraunhofer IML came up with a logistics concept
for this restructuring measures.
Currently, the operating complex comprises 16 operating
rooms, which are spread across two levels. As part of the
restructuring measures, the Orthopedics department is to be
integrated into the space subsequently but with operations
carrying on as normal while this is happening. In addition to
ensuring the required operating room capacity, the areas for
storing orthopedic sterile supplies and consumables need to be
integrated close to the operating rooms.
Another challenge is the fact that Orthopedics is the department
that takes up the most space but the necessary rooms
do not yet exist within the complex. The planned creation of
the center means that the entire operating complex will also
have to be restructured with a view to harnessing synergies
between the spaces and processes.
In order to achieve this aim, the researchers from Fraunhofer
IML developed a staged concept as part of the project that
provides a detailed description of the structural alteration work
and relocation measures within the operating complex. By
adopting a holistic view, the researchers were able to generate
additional storage areas and use the planned creation of the
center to unlock new potential in terms of space.
