/ Optimization Is Teamwork: Validation and
Planning – Festool Gets Ready for Action!
/ Festool GmbH is a manufacturing company specializing in
high-quality electric and pneumatic tools. At its headquarters
in Wendlingen, Baden-Württemberg, the company has set
itself the goal of redesigning the existing distribution center so
that it can continue to meet market requirements in the future.
Before joining forces with Fraunhofer in a project that ran from
January to November 2021, Festool conducted an independent
planning process. The results were compared and contrasted
with the alternative plans produced by Fraunhofer IML during
the initial phase of the project, before being validated using set
criteria and finally assessed. Thanks to a detailed data analysis,
it was possible to extrapolate data on future market requirements
and use it to determine how large the storage areas
should be, as well as how the material flow should be designed.
Taking this detailed analysis and the resulting adjustments
as a basis, Fraunhofer IML then produced an optimized plan.
In the second project phase, Festool and the Fraunhofer team
worked closely together to map out the fine details of the
hybrid plan, which consisted of one highly automated storage
area with efficient use of space and one flexible, manual
storage area.
The project’s most unique feature lay in the fact that the
researchers analyzed the customer’s preliminary plans both in
terms of feasibility and the suitability of the sizing and technologies.
The complex interplay between the material flows from
the highly automated storage system and the flexible, manual
storage system was a key element in meeting the sharply growing
demand in an effective, sustainable way.
