/ New Prototype Center at
Fraunhofer IML
/ Researchers at Fraunhofer IML have established a prototype
center at the institute, which pools existing expertise in
the fields of electrical engineering, microelectronics, additive
manufacturing and mechanical production. Due to agile
development methods in research and industry projects,
prototype development within the institute is facing increasing
demands on its capabilities and flexibility. The new center is
designed to address these challenges: The extensive expansion
via the successive modernization of the machinery and
the associated increase in manufacturing capabilities began in
2021.
Prototype development has been a core competence of
Fraunhofer IML since its establishment, and represents a key
stage in the development of innovative technologies for intralogistics
with significant industrial applications. Over the last
few decades, Fraunhofer IML has continuously developed this
competence. Using modern machines and capabilities, such as
additive manufacturing or SMD PCB manufacturing, scientists
have also been able to offer a broad portfolio for research and
industry projects.
The reason for establishing a prototype center is to strategically
strengthen the mechatronic core competences of Fraunhofer
IML in the field of prototype development in the long term.
The prototype center provides an environment in which researchers
can study, develop and create innovative cyber-physical
systems — from software to electronics to hardware — in an
interdisciplinary and holistic manner.
