GENERAL INFORMATION<br />

DS Switchgear Vintage I and II 1969 through 1984 at East Pittsburgh, PA<br />

The first vintage of DS switchgear was the<br />

first switchgear that incorporated the DS<br />

breaker with a solid-state trip unit (Amptector).<br />

During this time, the DS532 breaker<br />

was used. The DS532 breaker was a<br />

3000 ampere frame breaker with an interrupting<br />

rating of 50,000 symmetrical<br />

amperes. The structures themselves were<br />

of a stepped roof design that incorporated<br />

a standard bolted copper or flash welded<br />

aluminum bus design. Other characteristics<br />

of this switchgear include the following:<br />

rear frame height was 87.5 inches, flat<br />

roof sheets, ventilated front doors, wire<br />

ducts, removable instrument modules<br />

and a welded frame design. The breaker<br />

The third generation of DS switchgear<br />

was introduced due to the change of plant<br />

locations. It is classified as a vintage<br />

because it was the beginning of the merge<br />

between two plants (St. Louis and East<br />

Pittsburgh). The engineering was completed<br />

in East Pittsburgh and the assembly<br />

was built in St. Louis, along with the<br />

Cincinnati, OH plant to help pick up the<br />

slack until full production in St. Louis. This<br />

vintage was similar to the previous 27Y<br />

WPA Switchgear 1973-1984 at St. Louis, MO<br />

The WPA switchgear was designed for<br />

commercial applications that also used<br />

DS Breakers which was similar to the East<br />

Pittsburgh design for industrial applications.<br />

The two designs differed structurally<br />

but used the same <strong>breakers</strong>. Some<br />

characteristics of the WPA design are as<br />

follows: riser bus was tapered design,<br />

frames were bolted and not welded,<br />

height of 90 inches, neutral bus mounted<br />

DS Switchgear Vintage IV 1984-1990 at St. Louis, MO<br />

This vintage of switchgear was a combination<br />

of the St. Louis WPA and East Pittsburgh<br />

design. The design was classified as<br />

a hybrid between the two that consisted of<br />

the East Pittsburgh design in the front compartments<br />

that held the DS breaker and the<br />

St. Louis design in the rear compartment<br />

that housed the bus. The rear compartment<br />

still used the tapered riser bus<br />

(a characteristic of the St. Louis design)<br />

DS Switchgear Vintage V 1990-1994 at St. Asheville, NC<br />

The vintage was built from May of 1990 to<br />

the end of 1996 in Asheville. The switchgear<br />

is identified by Shop Order number<br />

28Y. The switchgear incorporates both designs<br />

with the option for the variety of IQ<br />

products. The riser bus went back to a full<br />

rated type that is bolted copper only. Aluminum<br />

bus work was initially done only<br />

on special orders at customer request.<br />

compartments were also different with<br />

fuse trucks stacked above the mains, the<br />

DS840, DS532 and the newly developed<br />

DS632. The outdoor design incorporated<br />

the use of a walk-in type side door entry.<br />

The second vintage of switchgear was a<br />

new design that incorporated the use of<br />

both bolted copper and welded extruded<br />

aluminum rise bus. It is basically the same<br />

as the first vintage but with a revised bus<br />

design.<br />

first time that both DS and DSL were used<br />

in switchgear by the use of a conjunction<br />

box. The physical appearance also<br />

changed by increasing the height to<br />

92 inches and adding top hat vents that<br />

protruded 4 inches above the switchgear.<br />

Internally the neutral bus was located in<br />

the bus compartment along with unified<br />

breaker compartments for the variety of<br />

<strong>breakers</strong>.<br />

The switchgear also has many improvements<br />

such as the design of an instrument<br />

panel door that was able to accommodate<br />

three device panels across DS632 in the C<br />

and D compartments and a variety of<br />

communication capabilities with IMPACC.<br />

The outdoor design changed with the concept<br />

of a side walk-in enclosure.<br />

The first vintage was built from September<br />

of 1969 to approximately September<br />

of 1973 in East Pittsburgh, PA using the<br />

shop order numbers with a prefix of 24Y.<br />

The second DS vintage was also built in<br />

East Pittsburgh which used the 27Y prefix<br />

on shop orders. This vintage was built the<br />

same time as the WPA design in St. Louis,<br />

MO. The switchgear in East Pittsburgh<br />

was designed to be used for industrial<br />

applications, whereas the St. Louis design<br />

was built for commercial applications.<br />

order number is defined by a prefix of 28Y.<br />
