Westinghouse Vac-Clad medium voltage<br />

metal-clad switchgear with type VCP vacuum<br />

power <strong>circuit</strong> <strong>breakers</strong> was introduced<br />

in 1981. Vacuum interrupter<br />

technology provided many advantages<br />

over the previous DH and DHP air magnetic<br />

breaker designs. Vacuum interrupters<br />

permitted the breaker size and weight to<br />

be significantly reduced, allowing for twohigh<br />

stacking construction of most breaker<br />

Renewal Parts<br />

Cutler-Hammer offers an extensive inventory<br />

of newly manufactured renewal parts<br />

for VCP switchgear structures and <strong>breakers</strong>.<br />

Fluidized Switchgear Bus<br />

Cutler-Hammer offers new fluidized epoxy<br />

bus – insulated bus to replace existing<br />

switchgear phase bus insulation.<br />

transfer system, which eliminated the<br />

transfer of primary current over a moving<br />

hinge (like DHP <strong>breakers</strong>) or sliding contact<br />

assembly (like DVP <strong>breakers</strong>). Porcelain<br />

insulation was maintained on the breaker<br />

elements and in the switchgear except for<br />

the 5 kV switchgear cell insulation, which<br />

was glass polyester as standard. The<br />

switchgear phase bus was insulated with a<br />

fluidized bed epoxy insulation system,<br />

which was a major improvement over the<br />

epoxy impregnated kraft paper or noryl<br />

that was used as sleeving on phase bus<br />

bars in previous switchgear designs.<br />

Vac-Clad switchgear was manufactured in<br />

indoor and in sheltered aisle and aisle-less<br />

outdoor enclosures.<br />

Ratings<br />

VCP switchgear provided the first complete<br />

line of Westinghouse vacuum <strong>breakers</strong><br />

in the medium voltage ratings:<br />

5 kV (250 and 350 MVA)<br />

7.5 kV (500 MVA)<br />

15 kV (500, 750 and 1000 MVA)<br />

Chronology<br />

Vac-Clad switchgear was introduced in<br />

1981 and was manufactured by Westinghouse<br />

in complete switchgear assemblies<br />

until the introduction of VacClad-W<br />

switchgear in 1986. Today, many capabilities<br />

still exist to support Vac-Clad<br />

switchgear.<br />
