Dispense As Written
(DAW)
Blue Cross provides for the payment of claims coded ‘‘dispense as
written’’ (DAW). Consistent with state law, DAW must be in the
physician’s handwriting or when an oral prescription is given,
specifically stated. Physicians may use DAW to prevent generic
substitution. Only a physician may indicate DAW on a
prescription. Neither member nor pharmacist may change this
status for any reason. A DAW may not always result in a lower
copay. This will be dependent on the patient’s benefit plan.
Investigative Drug Use Drugs used investigatively are not eligible for reimbursement.
