• Women and m<strong>in</strong>ority ethnic groups are bunched <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> certa<strong>in</strong><br />

lower level occupations <strong>in</strong> production and exhibition, and likely<br />

<strong>to</strong> be lower paid.<br />

• Women are under-represented <strong>in</strong> screenwrit<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong> camera work<br />

and other ‘technical’ jobs.<br />

• Ac<strong>to</strong>rs are more equitably represented <strong>in</strong> film by under-<br />

represented group; however, there is no statistical <strong>in</strong>formation<br />

about lead<strong>in</strong>g roles or types of roles allocated.<br />

• The film workforce has more people over 50 than the wider<br />

audio-visual sec<strong>to</strong>r, but younger people are <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g their<br />

representation <strong>in</strong> the sec<strong>to</strong>r.<br />

• There is no <strong>in</strong>formation about lesbian and gay men <strong>in</strong> the<br />

workforce.<br />

• Regional fund allocation is more equitable for under-<br />

represented groups than national allocations.<br />

• The majority of film workers are recruited by word of mouth <strong>to</strong><br />

film production, with half be<strong>in</strong>g approached by a producer or<br />

direc<strong>to</strong>r.<br />

• M<strong>in</strong>ority ethnic led (MEL) companies feel the commission<strong>in</strong>g<br />

process lacks clarity and openness <strong>in</strong> decision mak<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

• Women and m<strong>in</strong>ority ethnic groups feel <strong>in</strong>directly discrim<strong>in</strong>ated<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>in</strong> the film sec<strong>to</strong>r. Break<strong>in</strong>g out <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> the ma<strong>in</strong>stream has<br />

been def<strong>in</strong>ed as a barrier for ethnic m<strong>in</strong>ority owned bus<strong>in</strong>esses<br />

and potential employees.<br />
